What Board Certification Means
Board certification in criminal law is a formal credential issued by the NC State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. It is not a membership, a paid listing, or a marketing designation. It requires:
- A demonstrated record of substantial involvement in criminal law practice
- Favorable evaluation by peers — including judges and opposing counsel
- Completion of continuing legal education requirements specific to criminal law
- Passing a written examination administered by the NC State Bar
Very few attorneys in North Carolina hold this designation. Daniel Donahue is the only one based in Dare or Currituck County.
Background
Daniel grew up in the Outer Banks area and has spent his career in these courts. He founded Donahue Defense in 2011 with a deliberate focus: criminal law only, in Dare and Currituck County only.
His path to criminal defense started young. He accompanied his uncle — a prosecutor — to work as a kid and knew early that the courthouse was where he wanted to be. His own minor legal encounters as a teenager gave him a direct understanding of the power the government holds over people facing criminal charges — and shaped the professional goal he has pursued ever since.
When not in court, Daniel spends his time outdoors enjoying the Outer Banks.
