One Courthouse for the Whole County
Every state charge written in Dare County lists a court date at the Dare County Justice Center in Manteo, whether it came from a town police officer, a deputy, or a trooper. District Court handles traffic cases, DWI, and other misdemeanors. Felony charges start in District Court and usually move to Superior Court, which is also held in Manteo.
What a Conviction Can Cost You
An impaired driving conviction carries a license revocation. Traffic convictions can add license suspension and DMV points under N.C.G.S. Section 20-16 and insurance premium increases under the NC Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP), administered by the NC Commissioner of Insurance. Paying a ticket counts as a conviction. A criminal conviction can also stay on your record. See expungements for when a record can be cleared.
Visiting Dare County From Out of State?
From June through September, about two in three of our clients live outside North Carolina. A North Carolina conviction can be reported to your home state, and each state applies its own law to it. For how your state would treat a conviction, check with its licensing agency or a lawyer licensed there. See out-of-state tickets and out-of-state DWI.
Do I Have to Come to Court in Manteo?
It depends on the charge. In many traffic cases, your lawyer can appear for you. Some cases, including trials, require you to be there. We will tell you early which dates need you in person.
