Got a Ticket While Visiting the Outer Banks?
An out-of-state ticket from Dare or Currituck County can follow you home. If you pay it, you are convicted, and depending on your home state, that conviction can add points to your license and raise your insurance there.
Visitors get tickets on US 158, NC 12, US 64, and the Virginia Dare Trail every season, often on the drive in or the drive home. Most want to handle the ticket without another long round trip to the coast.

Paying the Ticket Is a Conviction
In North Carolina, paying a ticket by mail or online is a plea of guilty or responsible. Under N.C.G.S. Section 20-4.01, that counts as a conviction, and so does a forfeited bond that is not later set aside. Once you pay, the conviction is on your record and can be reported to your home state.
How Your Home State Treats an Out-of-State Ticket From North Carolina
Each state decides what to do with a conviction from another state. Here is what the licensing agencies in the home states of most Outer Banks visitors say about minor moving violations such as speeding:

Virginia Drivers: What to Know
Virginia is the most common home state for our clients. Virginia DMV assigns demerit points to traffic convictions from other states, so a North Carolina conviction can count against a Virginia license. At home, Virginia treats speeding 20 mph or more over the limit as a six-point offense and keeps reckless driving convictions on a driving record for 11 years. What North Carolina Can Do on Its Own
Even if your home state adds nothing, North Carolina keeps its own record of your privilege to drive here.
- Under N.C.G.S. Section 20-16, NC DMV can suspend your privilege to drive in North Carolina for speeding more than 75 mph where the limit is under 70 mph, more than 80 mph where the limit is 70 mph, or two speeding convictions over 55 mph within 12 months.
- Speeding more than 15 mph over the limit, or over 80 mph, is a Class 3 misdemeanor under N.C.G.S. Section 20-141, not just an infraction.
- Reckless driving is a Class 2 misdemeanor.
- Missing your court date can lead to a revocation of your North Carolina driving privilege under N.C.G.S. Section 20-24.1. Some home states also suspend a license for an unanswered out-of-state ticket.

Will a North Carolina speeding ticket go on my out-of-state license?
It depends on your home state. Virginia and New Jersey add points for out-of-state moving violations. Pennsylvania and New York generally do not record minor out-of-state moving violations for non-commercial drivers.
What happens if I ignore the ticket?
North Carolina can revoke your privilege to drive here for failing to appear, and on a misdemeanor charge an order for your arrest can issue. Some home states, including New York, suspend a license for an unanswered out-of-state ticket.
Will a North Carolina ticket raise my insurance if I am insured in another state?
North Carolina’s Safe Driver Incentive Plan, administered by the NC Commissioner of Insurance, sets surcharges for policies written in North Carolina. Your home-state insurer uses its own rules, usually based on what appears on your driving record.
