Charged With DWI or Ticketed in Corolla?
Corolla and Carova are in Currituck County, not Dare County. A DWI charge or traffic ticket written there is heard at the Currituck County Courthouse, 2801 Caratoke Highway in Currituck, on the mainland. Paying a ticket counts as a conviction.
Currituck County has no incorporated towns, so there are no town police departments. Enforcement in Corolla comes from county and state agencies, such as the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the NC State Highway Patrol. Stops happen on NC 12 during the busy summer season and on the four-wheel-drive beach north of Corolla.

DWI in Corolla and on the Beach in Carova
North Carolina’s DWI statute, N.C.G.S. Section 20-138.1, applies on any highway, street, or public vehicular area. Under N.C.G.S. Section 20-4.01, a public vehicular area includes any beach area used by the public for vehicular traffic. That means driving on the four-wheel-drive beach north of Corolla while impaired, or with an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more, can be charged as DWI, the same as driving on NC 12.
After a DWI arrest in Corolla or Carova:
- You are taken before a magistrate. With a result of 0.08 or more, or a refusal, a civil revocation of at least 30 days is ordered under N.C.G.S. Section 20-16.5.
- You can request a hearing to contest the civil revocation within 10 days.
- After at least 10 days of a 30-day revocation, you may qualify for a pretrial limited driving privilege if you obtain a substance abuse assessment and meet the other requirements.
- A refusal also brings a separate 12-month revocation from NC DMV. See refusal and license revocation.
- Your case proceeds in Currituck County District Court.
- If you are convicted, a first offense brings a one-year revocation, and the judge sentences you at one of six DWI sentencing levels.

Traffic Tickets in Corolla and Carova
A speeding conviction counts twice: DMV license points under N.C.G.S. Section 20-16, and insurance points under the Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP), administered by the NC Commissioner of Insurance. Some convictions also allow DMV to suspend a license.
See Currituck County speeding tickets for the points, the insurance math, speeding on the beach in Carova, and when a license can be suspended. We also handle reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and other traffic charges from Corolla.
Virginia and Other Out-of-State Drivers
Many people charged in Corolla live in Virginia or are visiting for the week. Virginia DMV says on its website that it assigns demerit points for traffic convictions from other states, and a North Carolina DWI conviction is reported to Virginia under the Driver License Compact. What Virginia does with a conviction is a question of Virginia law, so check with Virginia DMV or a lawyer licensed in Virginia. See out-of-state tickets and out-of-state DWI.
Beach Week and Underage Alcohol Charges
Graduates and families staying in Corolla for beach week are often cited for underage drinking, fake IDs, or giving alcohol to someone under 21. See Corolla beach week charges and underage DWI.
